How to Find a Missing App Store Icon on Your iPhone or iPad
If the App Store icon has vanished from your iPhone or iPad Home Screen, don’t worry. As a pre-installed system app, the App Store cannot be deleted. It’s likely hidden in a folder, tucked away in the App Library (on devices running iOS 14 or later), or its visibility is restricted by a software setting. This guide provides practical solutions to locate the missing icon and restore access to app downloads and updates.
1. Search Your Device
The quickest way to locate the App Store is using the built-in search functionality.
Swipe down from the middle of your Home Screen (or from the top-right corner on iPhones with a Home button) to access Spotlight Search.
Type “App Store.”
Tap the corresponding result to open the App Store. Once open, touch and hold the App Store icon to reveal the action menu. If you see “Add to Home Screen,” tap it. This indicates the icon was previously removed from the Home Screen, and this action will restore it.
2. Check the App Library (iOS 14 and later)
Introduced with iOS 14, the App Library automatically organizes all your apps, including the App Store.
Swipe left past your last Home Screen page to access the App Library.
The App Store is typically located in the “Utilities” category.
Locate the App Store icon, touch and hold it, and drag it to your desired Home Screen location.
3. Review Screen Time Settings
Restrictions configured within Screen Time can sometimes hide the App Store. Here’s how to check:
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap “Screen Time.”
- Tap “Content & Privacy Restrictions.”
- If “Content & Privacy Restrictions” is enabled, enter your Screen Time passcode.
- Tap ”Allowed Apps.” Ensure the “App Store” toggle is enabled (green).
- Return to the previous menu and tap “iTunes & App Store Purchases.” Ensure that installing apps is not restricted. Adjust any restrictions as needed.
4. Reset the Home Screen Layout (Last Resort)
If all else fails, resetting your Home Screen layout can sometimes restore the missing icon.
Important: This will reorganize your apps to their default arrangement and remove any custom folders. It will also reset the placement of widgets. Back up your device before proceeding if you wish to preserve your current layout.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap “General.”
- Tap ”Transfer or Reset iPhone/iPad” (or “Reset” on older iOS versions). Tap “Reset.” Then, tap “Reset Home Screen Layout.”
- Confirm your choice.
5. Managed Devices
If your iPhone or iPad is managed by an organization (e.g., a school or business), a Mobile Device Management (MDM) profile might be controlling the App Store icon’s visibility. Contact your organization’s IT department if the above solutions don’t work.
