iPhone 17 “Air” Might Not Be as Slim as Expected
Whispers from the Korean tech scene suggest that the anticipated svelte profile of next year’s iPhone 17 “Air” might not materialize as planned.
According to industry insiders cited by Naver account “yeux1122,” Apple has encountered manufacturing hurdles in achieving the desired thinness for the iPhone 17. The slimmer design reportedly hinges on a new battery with a thinner substrate. However, Apple is now grappling with technical challenges and cost constraints, seemingly leading them to revert to their current battery technology.
This setback implies the iPhone 17 Air’s battery will likely measure around 6mm thick, dictating a thicker overall device profile than initially envisioned. For context, Apple’s slimmest iPhone to date, the iPhone 6, measured 6.9mm. This suggests the iPhone 17 “Air” might not be significantly thinner than its 2014 predecessor. This also means the title of Apple’s thinnest devices likely remains with the 13-inch iPad Pro (5.1mm) and the seventh-generation iPod nano (5.4mm). As a point of comparison, the iPhone 16 Plus, which the iPhone 17 Air is expected to replace, measures 7.8mm in thickness.
Despite this potential adjustment in thinness, the iPhone 17 Air is still anticipated to debut in the fall of 2025, boasting features like the “A19” chip, a single rear camera, and a ProMotion display with refresh rates up to 120Hz.
