Meta has rolled out a fresh wave of enhancements to Instagram Direct Messaging, introducing features like live location sharing, personalized nicknames, expanded sticker options, and more.

Connecting with friends in the real world just got easier. Now you can share your live location within Instagram DMs for up to an hour, perfect for coordinating meetups. You can even pinpoint a specific location on a map for added convenience.

Instagram emphasizes the privacy-centric design of this feature. Live location sharing is exclusively available within private DMs, whether one-on-one or in group chats. The shared location automatically expires after 60 minutes and is deactivated by default. Crucially, only participants in the chat can view your location, and forwarding to other chats is disabled. Instagram encourages users to be mindful of their digital footprint and share location data only with trusted contacts.

Further personalizing the DM experience, Instagram now allows users to assign nicknames within chats. These nicknames replace lengthy usernames, making it easier to identify participants at a glance. To create a nickname, simply tap the chat name at the top of the conversation, then select “Nicknames” followed by the desired username.

Beyond location sharing and nicknames, Instagram has also enriched its sticker collection with 17 new packs, boasting over 300 fresh stickers for DM conversations. A new sticker tray and the ability to favorite frequently used stickers further enhance the expressive potential of DMs. This update comes as social media platforms increasingly prioritize private messaging features, and Instagram’s additions reflect this trend, offering users more control and personalization within their private conversations. With over [Insert current statistic about Instagram DM usage, e.g., “1 billion daily active users leveraging DMs”], these updates are poised to significantly impact how users connect.
