Unveiling the iPhone SE 4: A Legacy of Innovation with a Familiar Design

Emerging rumors from China suggest Apple’s next budget-friendly iPhone, the SE 4, will utilize the same rear chassis manufacturing techniques as the forthcoming iPhone 16, slated for a September release. This intriguing development has implications for both the design and potential features of the more affordable SE model, expected in spring.

According to Weibo leaker “Fixed Focus Digital,” the iPhone SE 4’s backplate construction mirrors that of the standard iPhone 16. This contradicts earlier speculation pointing towards a modified iPhone 14 chassis, as reported by MacRumors in November 2023, based on information from a source close to Apple’s production process. At that time, the source indicated the ‌iPhone SE‌ 4’s dimensions were identical to the base ‌iPhone 14‌ in its then-current development stage.

This shift in manufacturing strategy raises several questions. One possibility is that aligning the SE 4 with the iPhone 16’s production process allows Apple to capitalize on economies of scale as iPhone 14 production winds down. This streamlined approach could contribute to the SE 4’s anticipated sub-$500 price point.

Another intriguing implication revolves around the camera system. Previous rumors hinted at a single 48-megapixel rear camera for the ‌iPhone SE‌ 4, necessitating a custom backplate. However, the iPhone 16 is rumored to feature a novel vertical dual-lens arrangement, designed for Spatial Video capture compatible with the Vision Pro headset. Sharing the same backplate could suggest the iPhone SE 4 might also adopt this dual-camera configuration, although this remains speculative.

Apple aims to deliver significant upgrades with the fourth-generation iPhone SE while maintaining its affordability. Expected enhancements include transitioning from Touch ID and the Home button to Face ID and a display notch, along with a screen size increase from 4.7 to 6.1 inches. A USB-C port and an Action button are also anticipated additions. Given the third-generation iPhone SE’s March 2022 release, there’s likely considerable anticipation for a refreshed model incorporating features from Apple’s flagship iPhones.
