Display industry analyst Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), has hinted at a significant upgrade for Apple’s professional monitor lineup. In a recent blog post, Young suggested that the next iteration of the Pro Display XDR might leverage the same cutting-edge quantum dot technology found in the latest MacBook Pro models. This potential shift could represent a substantial leap in visual fidelity for Apple’s high-end display.
### Enhanced Visual Performance on the Horizon
Young’s insights, shared on social media, highlight the advantages of the latest quantum dot films. He asserts these films offer color gamut performance on par with or exceeding existing technologies, alongside enhanced motion performance. Compared to the KSF phosphor film reportedly used in the current Pro Display XDR and prior MacBook Pro generations, this suggests a potential for richer, more accurate colors and smoother on-screen motion in the rumored “Pro Display XDR 2.”
### A Long-Awaited Update
The current Pro Display XDR, launched in 2019 alongside the revamped Mac Pro, has yet to receive a hardware refresh. Its specifications, while impressive for their time, include a 32-inch 6K LCD panel with LED backlighting, a 60Hz refresh rate, a peak brightness of 1,600 nits, a single Thunderbolt 3 port, and three USB-C ports. The monitor’s premium price tag of $4,999, with an additional $999 for the Pro Stand, underscores its position in the professional market.

Rumors of a Pro Display XDR successor have circulated for some time. In 2022, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple was developing an updated version incorporating an Apple silicon chip, similar to the A13 Bionic found in the Studio Display. This chip empowers features like Center Stage, spatial audio, and Siri functionality. User expectations for the next-generation display also include integrated features like a built-in camera, speakers, and a higher refresh rate, aligning with the evolving demands of professional workflows.
